Rabbi Aharon Shapiro, who is an important figure in the San Diego community and promotes the importance and meaning of traditional Jewish garments, such as the Yarmulke and Tzitzits, was brutally attacked, inside a local 7-Eleven store, making this a vile example of the seemingly increasing string of antisemitic incidents taking place across the region recently. The distressing attack has prompted the San Diego Police Department to investigate the matter as a hate crime, as reported by ABC 10 News.
65-year-old Rabbi Shapiro walked into the store to buy two sodas when an unidentified suspect approached him and attacked him with antisemitic slurs, asking if he was Jewish and then launching into a tirade against Jews and Israel, which Shapiro detailed in a poignant interview. During the attack the suspect violently tore off one of the Rabbi's Tzitzit and threw it on the floor, spewing more vile and hate-filled slurs before running away from the scene, leaving those who had witnessed the horrifying incident completely stunned.

This recent incident is part of what appears to be an alarming trend of antisemitic attacks taking place in San Diego, including the vandalism of the Chabad House near San Diego State University at the end of March, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune, during which a large menorah was damaged, alongside the widespread distribution of antisemitic flyers targeting both Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities in many San Diego neighborhoods. The situation has led to growing fear among residents, with some blaming it on the hateful rhetoric of certain political leaders and some celebrities who are spreading such poisonous sentiments.

While some of the incidents might be attributed just to the use of hateful words, others as in the case of Rabbi Shapiro's attack and the vandalized menorah, had even more severe physical aspects. The local residents are demanding swift actions from law enforcement, while also seeking legal support in order to confront these hate crimes. In response to their concern, several places of worship, including Temple Emanu-El in Del Cerro and Tifereth Israel Synagogue in San Carlos, have amplified security measures as reported by NBC San Diego, in an effort to help protect their communities from violence and hate.

These tensions have pushed the people of affected San Diego neighborhoods to come together and band against antisemitism by forming support groups, sharing resources for fighting hate crimes, and reaching out to those who have been victimized in past attacks. A powerful example came from a married couple, Adele and Scott, who discovered the antisemitic flyers in their San Carlos neighborhood and took it upon themselves to go door-to-door, remove the flyers from their neighbors' car windshields, and try to restore a sense of unity and support within the community as mentioned by Hoodline San Diego.
Considering these recent incidents, Rabbi Shapiro, the victim of this heinous crime, is told ABC 10 News that he is calling for public awareness and action from legal and law enforcement in order to put a stop to these despicable hate crimes, not only against Jewish hate but hate in America in general.
