The San Jose Police Department (SJPD) has made a significant breakthrough in apprehending suspects allegedly responsible for multiple commercial burglaries targeting smoke shops. According to the SJPD, the suspects primarily used stolen Kia or Hyundai vehicles to collide with the businesses, breach their entrance, and steal merchandise, causing significant property damage.
Jose Cabellos, aged 25, has been identified as one of the main suspects involved in at least eight commercial burglaries in March and April 2023. However, the SJPD believes additional accomplices were involved, and detectives are now pursuing leads. On June 16, 2023, officers arrested Cabellos in San Jose. Though his arrest seemingly halted the crime spree, a disturbing new wave of burglaries following the same pattern struck in July 2023.

On July 24, 2023, an attempted burglary at a smoke shop on Almaden Expressway was interrupted by Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Deputies, who were able to apprehend three juvenile suspects following a car crash. As reported by the SJPD, these individuals have been booked into the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall.
A noteworthy aspect of this crime wave is the choice of vehicles used: the SJPD Burglary Unit cites an alarming trend in criminals stealing 2010-2021 Kia and 2015-2021 Hyundai models to commit burglaries. Social media has played a critical role in disseminating information on how to exploit these vehicles using USB cords left in the car. Smoke shops and similar businesses have become prime targets as a result.
Due to these concerning trends, the SJPD offers tips for both drivers and businesses to avoid falling victim to similar crimes. For drivers, security recommendations include utilizing secondary security systems, familiarizing oneself with current crime trends, not leaving valuables and phone chargers in the car, and parking in well-lit areas with surveillance cameras. Meanwhile, businesses are advised to reinforce doors, windows, and entrances, stay updated on crime trends, and install surveillance cameras and alarm systems.
The SJPD urges anyone with information related to these commercial burglaries to come forward and assist in further investigations.
