Early today a crash on Interstate 280 in Los Altos Hills left two people dead and two injured, as a driver going the wrong way collided with another vehicle according to KRON4. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has confirmed that the wrong-way driver is suspected of driving under the influence (DUI).
The tragic accident occurred around 1 a.m., when a Honda Civic driver traveled north on the southbound I-280 lanes near the El Monte Road off-ramp as reported by The Mercury News. The driver collided head-on with a Toyota Avalon, causing fatal injuries to both the driver and a passenger in the Honda. The two occupants of the Toyota – both in their 40s and from Santa Clara and Los Gatos – suffered major injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Officer Art Montiel of the CHP stated that the Honda's driver appeared to be under the influence of a substance. The driver and their 23-year-old male passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene according to NBC Bay Area. The current condition of the Toyota's occupants remains unknown at this time.
Following the collision, law enforcement quickly blocked all lanes of traffic on I-280, diverting it east and west of the freeway. The roadway was eventually cleared and reopened by 6 a.m.
