
In a heart-wrenching incident, a 12-year-old girl was tragically killed in a collision while paddleboarding in Mission Bay on Saturday. An 18-year-old man on a personal watercraft crashed into her according to Fox 5 San Diego. The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. in the De Anza Cove area.
As reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune, the young victim was brought to shore by first responders who immediately began performing CPR. After being taken to a nearby hospital, the girl succumbed to her injuries. The 18-year-old man from Bellflower, California, whose identity has yet to be released, was operating the jet ski involved in the accident. Authorities confirmed that alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
The San Diego Police Department's Harbor Unit is currently investigating the incident, and further details are yet to be revealed. NBC San Diego reported that the area in which the collision occurred is considered an "open speed" zone, where the law requires slowing down to 5 mph or less when within 100 feet of the shore or another watercraft operator.
