The shocking death of 27-year-old Dario Baeza from Chula Vista, a city within San Diego, has left his friends and family in mourning as they grapple with this tragic loss. According to ABC 10News, Baeza was visiting a relative in Lomas Taurinas, a small neighborhood near the US-Mexico border, when he was caught in the crossfire and shot multiple times on August 3, 2023.
Baeza's family members, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, described the young man as a Southwest High School graduate who worked in construction, and aspired to earn an engineering degree. “Everybody is numb. We can't believe that this happened,” a family member shared with ABC 10News. Despite reaching out to the Mexican consulate, the San Diego Police Department, and the FBI for updates on the investigation into Baeza's death, ABC 10News has not received any responses as of now.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by S Baeza to help cover Dario’s medical and funeral expenses, gathering over $11,000 within a day and aiming to reach a $15,000 goal. In the fundraiser description, Dario is remembered as a dedicated, hardworking young man who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was working towards his engineering degree when he was not at work and loved playing soccer with friends in his free time.
Since the launch of the fundraiser, numerous individuals have come together to express their grief and shared words of support, reminiscing about their moments spent with Dario. Among them, a former coworker, Jairo Perez, reminisced about Dario's favorite song and how he would play it in the stockroom of their workplace. Another, Bernice Zamarron, expressed in a message to Dario: "You were an amazing friend, always knew how to make people laugh and smile, especially when they needed it most. I’ll forever cherish the memories we have, thank you for everything."
