An 18-foot boat disabled off the coast of Solana Beach caught the attention of local authorities today, leading to 14 people being detained.
According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the U.S. Coast Guard was notified by the Department of California State Parks around 10:30 a.m. after the boat was spotted attempting to land near Carlsbad. Since local police and lifeguards halted it from reaching the shore, the boat continued south and tried to land at Fletcher Cove, only to break down about 100 yards offshore, as CBS 8 reported.
As the Coast Guard approached the vessel, a man jumped into the water and was detained by lifeguards, explained Petty Officer Alex Gray, adding that the rest of the group, mostly Mexican nationals, were subsequently taken into custody and handed over to Border Patrol.
The reason for the group's attempted landing was unclear, but it is worth noting that earlier that very morning, surfers discovered an abandoned boat, believed to have been used for human smuggling, on the beach in Del Mar's Sea Cliff Park, Hoodline reported.
This abandoned boat, described as a pleasure craft, was found off Coast Boulevard near 15th Street and was promptly towed away by Del Mar lifeguards for further inspection, according to The Coast News.
The uptick in maritime smuggling in California, particularly during warmer months, has been widely documented. Hoodline highlighted a separate incident, just three weeks prior, where an abandoned panga boat was found on Mission Beach with 13 life jackets left behind. Questions arise regarding whether the embarking individuals have safely reached their intended destinations or remain stranded somewhere, awaiting help.
