Authorities are urgently seeking the public's assistance in identifying a man they believe attempted to rob a San Ysidro money exchange before setting it ablaze.
On July 18, 2023, the unidentified man entered the business on West San Ysidro Boulevard around 7:50 p.m., demanded money from employees, and when they refused to comply, he escalated the situation by igniting a fire inside the establishment. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the suspect then fled the scene on foot. Miraculously, no injuries have been reported, but the unsettling occurrence has raised tensions in the local community, who are eager to bring this individual to justice, and the man's image captured on surveillance cameras has surfaced as the key to solving this heinous crime that might have had more devastating consequences, as luck would have it.
As further reported by FOX 5 San Diego, the surveillance footage shows the suspect, described as a Latino man in his 20s, wearing dark sunglasses, khaki pants, a red flannel jacket with a black hoodie underneath, and a gray collared shirt. Eyewitness accounts from employees who experienced the distressing incident firsthand, corroborate the visual evidence obtained, and in a concerted effort to prevent any future criminal activity by this individual, law enforcement is relying on citizens to come forth with any relevant information regarding the suspect's identity or whereabouts.
A reward of up to $1,000 has been offered by San Diego County Crime Stoppers for anyone who provides information leading to an arrest in the case. The organization, along with investigators from the Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST), is urging members of the public who recognize the man or have any information on the case to come forward.
In addition to contacting MAST directly at (619) 236-6815, anyone with valuable insights but preferring to remain anonymous can make use of Crime Stoppers' anonymous tip line by calling (888) 580-8477 or submitting their tip through the Crime Stoppers website.
