On Tuesday evening, an officer-involved shooting occurred during a tense standoff on El Cajon Boulevard, resulting in the death of a suspect who had been the subject of a search warrant, as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. This incident raises critical questions about the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers and the necessary measures to ensure the safety of all involved during high-stress situations.
The fatal incident began at around 6:45 p.m. when San Diego Police Department (SDPD) detectives attempted to serve a search warrant for an apartment in the 6100 block of El Cajon Boulevard, according to the press release. The subject of the search warrant was identified as the outstanding suspect in a shooting that had taken place on August 2, which had required a police response to Mesa College. Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter and initiated a containment and call-out procedure, first making phone calls and then giving verbal commands and warnings directly outside the apartment.
As detailed by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect eventually emerged from the residence, brandishing what appeared to be a handgun. Officers instructed the suspect to drop the weapon, which he ultimately complied with; however, he then refused subsequent orders to move away from the weapon. Despite multiple warnings and commands from officers, the suspect lunged toward the gun, prompting one officer to discharge his firearm multiple times. The suspect was struck by at least one round and, despite receiving medical aid, succumbed to his injuries at around 7:00 p.m. No officers or civilians were harmed during the standoff, although residents of the building were evacuated for their safety.
In accordance with the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Unit has launched an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. This incident, like others before it, will undergo a rigorous examination process, including evidence gathering, witness interviews, and a thorough analysis of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Once the Homicide Unit's investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether the officers involved are liable for any state criminal charges as a result of their actions. Concurrently, the San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer's discharge of their firearm, and the Commission on Police Practices (CPP) will review the incident, offering any relevant recommendations.
