In the quiet community of Mission Valley, San Diego, the city's storm drains conceal a macabre discovery. On August 18th, 2023, maintenance workers lifted a manhole cover, only to find a badly decomposed body lying at the bottom of a small concrete area used for cleaning the storm drain, according to 10 News. The find has prompted an investigation by the San Diego Police Homicide Unit.
San Diego Police Department officers responded to the scene in the 2300 block of Northside Drive at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, as The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Unable to ascertain much about the body due to its state of decomposition, the police sought immediate collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
With the lack of recognizable features and the unusual location of the remains, the San Diego Police Homicide Unit have taken over the investigation, as the Union-Tribune indicates. Once extracted from the storm drain by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the Medical Examiner's Office will be tasked with determining the cause of death and identifying the deceased, whether male or female, and their age, race, and other details.
As investigations are set to unfold, the San Diego Police Department continues to urge anyone with information about the found body to come forward and contact the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
