Residents of Coronado's Silver Strand and Imperial Beach have been caught in a state of alarm following the uncovering of E. coli bacteria in the local drinking water system. San Diego County's Department of Environmental Health and Quality, in response to the contamination, issued an urgent boil water advisory for the affected areas today as reported by FOX 5 San Diego. With the presence of E. coli hinting at the likelihood of human or animal waste contamination, health concerns soar, particularly for infants, young children, the elderly, and individuals with severely compromised immune systems.
According to the County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services, the advisory was issued after drinking water tests returned positive for E. coli bacteria. The emergence of such bacteria could lead to various health problems, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms, intensifying the potential risks for the vulnerable demographics.
The State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water has joined forces with the Cal American Water Company to issue a boil water advisory for Silver Strand area of Coronado and Imperial Beach, announced through Coronado's official website. Affected customers are being contacted directly with additional information in an effort to ensure their safety.
Authorities stress that the water is not safe to drink without taking proper precautions. They advise residents to bring all water to a rolling boil for at least three minutes, allowing it to cool before using it. The use of bottled water is also encouraged for drinking, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice to minimize any potential health risks.
While the water supply remains compromised, the situation is being closely monitored, and lab tests are being conducted to ensure the elimination of bacteria. The boil water advisory is in effect until lab results confirm the absence of any bacteria in the water supply. Until then, it is imperative that residents follow the guidelines set forth by authorities to protect themselves and their loved ones from any potential harm.
