Fatal Accident Leads to Closure of US101 South Near Santa Clara

Today, August 10th, 2023, a fatal accident occurred on US101 South near Santa Clara. Multiple units of the Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene at 3:45 a.m to find a black Ford Edge and an unknown vehicle had collided. Firefighters arrived and began extricating a passenger from the Ford.

At 3:52 a.m, a black Volkswagen GTI was found several hundred feet away with two blown out right tires. All lanes were closed while authorities worked to investigate the incident and tow vehicles away. A Santa Clara Coroner's Office was contacted to come to the scene and confirm the fatality of one of the parties involved.

Emergency services contacted the Santa Clara Coroner's Office and the Department of Transportation (DOTCC) to document the incident. Authorities closed down the southbound side of the highway in order to assess the damages and put safety protocols in place. The scene was cleared and the roads reopened. However, due to the severity of the accident, delays are still expected. An investigation is underway to further determine the cause of the collision.

At 4:17 a.m, all lanes were opened for traffic, though delays were expected. At 9:17 a.m the SIGALERT was cancelled and all lanes were reopened safely.
