On Sunday, a hazardous high-speed pursuit in Escondido, California came to a devastating conclusion when a 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed upon colliding with two vehicles. According to the Escondido Police Department, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) attempted to stop the motorcyclist for speeding on southbound Interstate 15 at SR76. The fleeing suspect led authorities into Valley Center before racing west into Escondido.

The CHP, having lost sight of the motorcyclist, stopped their pursuit at Valley Parkway and Ash Street. An assisting Escondido PD officer later spotted the cyclist and the chase resumed. Before the officer could fully engage, the motorcyclist ran a red light at eastbound Washington Ave and Harding Street, collided with a vehicle traveling north, and ultimately crashed into the front end of a westbound vehicle. First responders, unfortunately, were unable to save the motorcyclist who was pronounced dead at the scene. Fox 5 San Diego reported that the identification of the young man, a Lake Elsinore resident, remains pending as authorities contact his family.

The female drivers of both vehicles involved were Escondido residents. One woman was uninjured in the incident, while the other experienced pain and was transported to the hospital, as reported by Times of San Diego. The traffic unit of the Escondido Police Department is continuing to investigate the accident, and it is still unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in its occurrence.

As investigation continues, Escondido Police urges witnesses or anyone with information to contact Officer Paul Smyth at (760) 839-4423.
