A Home Depot in San Carlos, California, became the scene of a violent altercation after a suspected shoplifter assaulted a security guard, leading to the guard shooting the suspect in self-defense, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Store employees at the Home Depot, located at 1125 Old County Road, confronted the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Jonathan Mackey, on suspicion of shoplifting. The encounter then escalated into a physical altercation.

During the brawl, Mackey managed to gain control of a security guard's collapsible baton and used it to strike the guard in the head and face. He subsequently threw the baton through a glass window near the store’s entrance, as described in KRON4's coverage. Fearing for his life, the security guard fired two shots at Mackey, striking him with at least one bullet.

A San Mateo County Sheriff's Deputy who was patrolling nearby heard the shots and responded to the incident quickly. The deputy arrested Mackey, and both the suspect and the injured guard were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Upon further investigation, Mackey was booked into a San Mateo County jail on robbery and assault charges, and his first court appearance is set for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Law enforcement officers are urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office can be reached at 650-363-4911.
