James Mumper Jr., 19, has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the tragic stabbing death of 17-year-old Mateo Castillo in Chula Vista, California, casting a lingering shadow over a house party held back in 2022, according to 10 News. Mumper, who was 18 at the time of the killing, is set to be sentenced to 12 years in state prison later this year, as reported by Chula Vista Today.
The incident occurred on November 12, 2022, when Castillo, then a senior at Valhalla High School in Rancho San Diego, was fatally stabbed at a house party in Chula Vista. In the early hours of the morning, around 12:45 a.m., police received a 911 call reporting someone had been stabbed and was dying in the 900 block of Rigley Street, as described by the 10 News article.
Chula Vista Police found Castillo with at least one stab wound and pronounced him dead at the home less than an hour later. The party, which was attended by more than 60 people, also witnessed another 17-year-old boy being stabbed and an additional one being assaulted. Mumper was not charged in connection with those incidents, Chula Vista Today reported.
