Early Wednesday morning, a 49-year-old man, Barry Knowlton, allegedly attacked his elderly parents, a neighbor, and the neighbor's dog, in Vista, North San Diego County. According ABC 10 News, the assaults started around 6 a.m. at a home in the 1300 block of Via Christina and resulted in multiple injuries to all parties involved.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has charged Knowlton with attempted murder, felony elder abuse, burglary, and cruelty to animals, FOX 5 San Diego reports. The alleged incidents began with Knowlton choking his mother repeatedly and punching his father in the face, leaving them with neck and facial injuries. In a terrifying development, Knowlton then proceeded to choke his father while covering the older man's mouth to stop him from breathing, according to NBC San Diego.
Following the violent attack on his parents, Knowlton allegedly broke into a neighbor's house, leading to a fight with the neighbor and an unprovoked attack on a small dog. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities were able to arrest Knowlton without incident and transported him to the Vista Detention Facility where he is booked on his charges.
The elderly parents were treated at the scene by paramedics for their neck and facial injuries, while the neighbor had a hand injury. Thankfully, the dog is reportedly recovering from its injuries as well.
Due to California's bail reform legislation, the more stringent requirement of holding a defendant without bail in cases like this is not as straightforward as it once was. Thankfully for Vista and surrounding communities, Knowlton is currently being held without bail pending his arraignment scheduled for Friday afternoon, as reported by NBC San Diego.
