Early Wednesday morning, an otherwise quiet neighborhood in Sunnyvale, California was disrupted by the sound of gunshots. The victim, an adult male, had been wounded while confronting a group of thieves attempting to steal the catalytic converter from his vehicle. According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS), officers responded to a residence on the 1500 block of Klamath Drive at approximately 3:30 a.m. and discovered the injured man.

Upon arrival, officers administered emergency medical care to the victim, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital by ambulance and is expected to be released later today, as reported on the Sunnyvale DPS website. The preliminary investigation has revealed that four suspects were involved in the attempted theft and fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan following the shooting.

Catalytic converter thefts have been an ongoing problem across the country, posing significant financial burdens on vehicle owners. The converters contain valuable metals, making them a prime target for thieves.

Sunnyvale DPS is actively investigating the shooting and has urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective N. Kakis at 408-730-7110.
