A 22-year-old man was tragically killed after being stabbed in the chest at Mesa Verde Park in Mira Mesa. According to Fox 5 San Diego, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel were dispatched to the park on Friday night, August 12, just after 10 p.m., where they found the victim, wounded and in need of immediate medical attention.
The paramedics made every effort to save the man's life, rushing him to a nearby hospital; however, despite their best efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries shortly after reaching the hospital, as reported by San Diego Union-Tribune. The authorities have preliminarily identified the victim and are currently withholding his name until his family is notified.
According to ABC 10 News, the SDPD Homicide Detectives are investigating the incident and have gleaned that an argument broke out between the victim and the suspect – both of whom were in a group of transient men. During this heated altercation, the 17-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed the victim in the chest, with the fatal strike penetrating his heart before fleeing the chaotic scene, only to return a short time later.
Upon returning to the park, the young suspect, whose name has not been disclosed due to his status as a minor, was contacted and subsequently arrested by officers at the scene. He has been booked into San Diego County Juvenile Hall, as Fox 5 San Diego states. While little is known about the origins of the altercation or the relationship between the victim and suspect,SDPD detective Lt. Steven Shebloski reveals, as cited by the San Diego Union-Tribune, that both the victim and the suspect were known to be unhoused and had some prior familiarity with one another.
As the investigation continues, SDPD Homicide Detectives are now processing the scene for physical evidence, analyzing surveillance footage, and reaching out to anyone who may have witnessed the harrowing incident first hand.
Officials urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or, for those who wish to remain anonymous, they can call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. ABC 10 News reported.
