A student attending a summer program at Harker School, a K-12 college preparatory institution in San Jose, California, was found unresponsive in the pool at the lower school campus on August 2, 2023. The student was transported to the hospital, with their current condition remaining undisclosed.
The unfortunate incident took place at Harker's lower school campus, which serves kindergarten through fifth grade students, during a swimming session. As Mercury News reported, lifeguards were present when the student was discovered floating in the pool. A lifeguard and school nurse immediately performed CPR on the student until paramedics arrived on the scene.
Head of School Brian Yager expressed his condolences to the family, stating to KRON4, "We continue to send our thoughts and prayers to the family and are focusing on their needs and respecting their privacy." Yager also acknowledged the emotional impact of the event, assuring that the school will be providing counseling services for the campers, students, and staff affected by the incident.
As a result of the distressing occurrence, summer camp has been canceled for the rest of the week, and the school will be reviewing all processes and protocols involving their summer camp swimming program. A full investigation into what happened is underway. Yager emphasized the school's commitment to the wellbeing of their students.
