According to The Boston Globe, while the exact amount of the donation remains undisclosed, the Krantz family's contribution ensures annual funding for collaborative research projects, the acquisition of advanced technologies essential to support lab research, and the establishment of an endowment for long-term sustainability. Their commitment serves as the largest cancer research-centric gift in Massachusetts General Hospital's history, according to EurekAlert.
Jason Krantz, the founder and executive chairman of Definitive Healthcare, emphasized the importance of this donation by stating that cancer research is at a crossroads, with significant progress made in the last decade but cures for many forms of the disease still out of reach. The Krantz family believes their investment can enable a monumental change in cancer diagnosis and treatment, benefiting patients worldwide.
David F. M. Brown, MD, President of Massachusetts General Hospital, acknowledges the Krantz family's gift as pivotal for the future of cancer research. Not only does it recognize the accomplishments of Mass General Cancer Center so far, but it also gives a critical boost to upcoming research efforts and the knowledge and solutions towards conquering cancer.
As part of their generous gift, the Krantz family introduced a new series of competitive awards for researchers at the Krantz Family Center for Cancer Research. These awards include Quantum Awards, Breakthrough Awards, and Spark Awards, with substantial prize funds allocated for research with transformative potential, projects that accelerate promising scientific concepts, and testing thought-provoking ideas, respectively.
Daniel Haber, MD, PhD, and director of Mass General Cancer Center and the Krantz Family Center for Cancer Research, expressed excitement at the prospect of accelerated research at Mass General due to the Krantz family's generosity. Their partnership and financial support will enable faculty members to pursue cutting-edge research and potentially shorten the time from discovery to approved therapy, which can bring about dramatic changes in cancer treatment.
