Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de León, embroiled in a scandal involving his participation in a racially charged recorded conversation, announced earlier Today, that he will seek reelection, defiantly holding onto his seat despite persistent calls for his resignation. Fox LA reported the announcement.
In an interview with Politico, de León expressed his confidence in the support of his constituency, stating, "When a lot of people that I called my friends and allies turned away from me, my constituents had my back." He believes his deeper understanding of the relationship with his community, and how that motivates him, serves as a driving force for his decision to run for re-election.
However, the once-ascendant politician faces formidable opposition, with Assembly members Miguel Santiago and Wendy Carrillo both announcing bids for de León's seat. These contenders insist that the city needs new blood on the council to fully move on, arguing that voters want a clean break from the tainted past associated with the scandal-ridden Democrat.
Outside of the established political sphere, Ysabel Jurado, a tenant rights lawyer and member of the city's progressive flank, is also a vocal critic of de León, casting her candidacy as a break from years of bad governance in the district.
Once a darling of progressives in California, de León's political career was brought to the brink after a leaked audio recording captured a conversation fraught with disparaging and racist language. The incident brought embarrassment to a City Council already mired in ethical controversies.
In the wake of the scandal, de León has expressed remorse for the offensive statements and has worked tirelessly to regain the trust of his constituency through attentive service at the community level. This includes cutting ribbons for new playground equipment and providing free food boxes to residents of his district.
While some of his former political allies have denounced him, and raising funds for his campaign remains a challenge, de León is looking to win back voters.
