Yesterday, the San Jose Police Department (SJPD) received a staggering number of reports regarding multiple vehicle burglaries and auto theft in the Southern and Western Divisions of the city. In a game of cat and mouse, the vigilant efforts of law enforcement officials, coupled with advanced surveillance technology, led to the arrest of four juveniles suspected to be involved in the string of crimes.
A total estimated 50 vehicles were burglarized, after which an initial investigation led to the identification of two suspect vehicles. The first, a stolen white Hyundai sedan, found unoccupied not long after being spotted. With the help of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras, the SJPD Air Support Unit managed to track the second vehicle, a black 2013 Land Rover SUV, confirming it had been stolen from Sunnyvale, noted the SJPD news release.
As soon as the police attempted an enforcement stop, the young suspects fled on foot, leading to a brief chase eventually culminating in their arrest. The captives were booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall, while detectives continued to investigate the extent of their involvement in the car burglaries and theft.
The SJPD provided a list of precautions for residents to consider to prevent such crimes. Among these tips, simple yet crucial maneuvers include not leaving valuables in the vehicle, locking doors, parking in well-lit areas, and using common sense before leaving one's car unattended.
Investigators are urging the public to review their surveillance footage for any evidence of the suspects in the Willow Glen and South San Jose areas, between the evening of September 9th and the early hours of September 10th, 2023. Those with information or relevant surveillance video can contact Detective Potwora of the SJPD Burglary Unit, as mentioned in the news release.
