Los Angeles bore witness to a car chase that ended in an unexpected and dramatic fashion. Earlier today, a suspect led the Los Angeles Police Department on a high-speed pursuit lasting well over an hour. The driver of a carjacked Mercedes-Benz sedan weaved through traffic, dangerously evading police capture, before coming to a halt with a not-so-graceful somersault out of the vehicle according to FOX LA.
The chase began around 3 p.m. and involved a stolen black Mercedes sedan, with a Senegalese or Rasta flag flying from its sunroof. The suspect evaded Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers on multiple freeway routes, with a reported arrest on grand theft auto charges, as well as three others detained in connection to the pursuit per KTLA 5.
At one point, the suspect appeared to toss a gun out of the car window while driving along the 110 Freeway; a second gun was subsequently recovered by LAPD. The chase continued, with the suspect throwing items out of the window and even onto a sidewalk in an attempt to delay police pursuit according to a CBS News report.
However, the chase met an extraordinary conclusion in Mid City when an unexpected civilian hero blocked the suspect's stolen vehicle with their towncar, forcing the suspect to surrender. With police officers in close proximity, the suspect failed to fully escape through the driver's side window and ultimately somersaulted out, before being taken into custody CBS News reports.
In the face of this gripping ordeal, no injuries have been reported as a result of the pursuit. The suspect is believed to have connections to a robbery, as stolen jewelry was found in his possession according to FOX LA.
