Italian Pizza Reviewer Says Chicago's Spacca Napoli is One of the World's BestSource: Google Street View

In Ravenswood, Chicago, a small pizzeria with a big reputation is serving up some of the world's best pizza. Spacca Napoli has recently been ranked 93rd out of 100 on the Italian-based "Guide to Best Pizzerias in the World" for 2023, according to a Chicago Sun-Times article. The pizzeria is the only establishment in Illinois to make the list, showcasing the dedication and passion of its owner, Jonathan Goldsmith.

Goldsmith's attention to detail and commitment to authenticity is unparalleled. Sourcing his wine from the southern Italian island of Ischia, and mozzarella di bufala from the Caserta province in Naples, he ensures that his customers get to savor a true Italian experience. In addition to the perfect pizza, Goldsmith is known for his personal touch, often seen in the kitchen or attending to customers at their tables.

Spacca Napoli opened its doors in 2006, and its success has been well-earned. Previously recognized in the 2015 Michelin Guide, the pizzeria's accomplishments continue to pile up. However, Goldsmith remains modest, stating that he is always honored to be recognized, as mentioned in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Competition on the "Guide to Best Pizzerias in the World" is fierce, with Italy unsurprisingly dominating the top spots. However, renowned pizzerias from Tokyo and Beijing have also earned their place among the global elite. The list, compiled by "50 Top Pizza World," features pizzerias rated by anonymous "inspectors" who evaluate numerous pizzas annually, with a focus on customer care and, most importantly, the quality of ingredients.

Goldsmith's love for Italy doesn't end with sourcing ingredients – he visits the country at least three times a year to research, meet with fellow pizza and wine makers, and strengthen bonds with his producers. He and his wife, artist Ginny Sykes, are even considering purchasing a house in Italy. Nevertheless, Goldsmith has made it clear that he isn't ready to say goodbye to Spacca Napoli or the city of Chicago, where he has resided since 1978.

Earlier this year, Spacca Napoli also ranked 14th in a guide to the top 50 pizza spots in the US, per a NBC Chicago article. The pizzeria's recent ascent to the global rankings signifies a major achievement, placing it in the esteemed company of establishments in cities such as Naples, Barcelona, Rome, Tokyo, and Beijing.

Though Neapolitan-style pizza is their specialty, the menu at Spacca Napoli extends beyond that. The pizzeria also offers a variety of traditionally Italian fried dishes, pasta, main courses, and desserts. As NBC Chicago notes, Spacca Napoli is the only Midwest pizzeria to be featured on the world-renowned list.
