Boston is leading the way in innovative approaches to early education, with the city's annual Countdown to Kindergarten Celebration held at the Children's Museum. This August occasion marked another successful year, ringing in a new era of change for the next generation of young students.
The core mission of Countdown to Kindergarten lies in easing the transition into school for both children and their families. It's a colorful, engaging, and supportive environment where kindergartners proudly wear their yellow "I'm going to Kindergarten" t-shirts, symbolizing the exciting journey that lies ahead.
Notable local leaders were present for this year's event, including Boston Public Schools (BPS) Superintendent Mary Skipper and Director of the Mayor's Office of Early Childhood Kristin McSwain, who made special efforts to greet and foster connections with families in attendance. The ever-popular Boston Saves team made a special splash, helping promote financial planning and responsible savings practices among parents and guardians for their children's future education.
Each kindergartner received a free backpack filled with essential school supplies, courtesy of Cradles to Crayons. Families had the opportunity to explore a real school bus, enjoy the museum exhibits, and even have a dance break with a live DJ.
Beyond the holistic experience, the event connects parents and guardians with an array of valuable resources and programs specifically designed for their young ones. For instance, Boston Saves, the City of Boston's children's savings account program, informed attendees that each K2 student receives a $50 college savings account to foster a pathway to academic achievement. Families can expect further information to be sent out in November.
Countdown to Kindergarten represents a trilateral partnership between the BPS, City of Boston, and a myriad of community organizations, all committed to providing a positive and supportive transition into BPS kindergarten for students and their families. Among the many features offered by the initiative are free parent-child playgroups, readiness tips, and opportunities for various workshops and other transition activities.
