Yesterday afternoon, a vegetation fire erupted on Monterey Road in the City of Pacifica, presenting firefighters with a difficult uphill battle. According to a Facebook post by the North County Fire Authority, the flames advanced with a slow rate of spread towards Inverness Drive.
The first arriving fire company reported a ¼ acre blaze burning mid-slope with no easy way to access the fire. A total of 9 fire companies, 3 chief officers, and 1 fire investigator were called to respond, facing steep terrain and challenging conditions as they worked to quickly contain the flames.
Firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire, which ultimately consumed one acre of land. Fortunately, no structures were threatened, no property was damaged, and no residents required evacuation. Fire companies remained on the scene for two and a half hours, diligently extinguishing hot spots and securing a line around the fire's edge. There were no reported injuries among the firefighters, according to the same post.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the North County Fire Authority Fire Prevention Division's Fire Investigation Section. These potential hazards posed by wildfires call for the importance of employing preventative measures, such as cutting and removing dry grass and flammable vegetation around homes and businesses.
