Yesterday, a dispute brewing on the streets of Rancho Cucamonga quickly morphed into a heart-stopping spectacle. A high-speed police chase, which spanned the breadth of San Bernardino County, ended abruptly in Montclair when the pursued vehicle crashed and gunfire was exchanged.
It all began with a distressing scene of a man assaulting a woman on the 7800 block of Haven Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga. Members of the public, who had had witnessed the violent episode, alerted the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. According to the NBC Los Angeles report, the suspect fled the scene in a car when deputies arrived. The chase ensued, and during its course, the suspect abandoned his initial vehicle and commandeered a BMW belonging to a family member.
As reported on Fox 11 News, the pursuit ultimately plunged into Montclair, where the suspect stopped at a gas station, ostensibly to fill up the vehicle. This pit stop would be his undoing, as the police, seizing the opportunity, boxed him in. It was at this point that gunshots rang out, though it remains unclear whether it was law enforcement or the suspect who initiated the gunfire.
An alarming aftermath unfolded as the suspect attempted to flee on foot. He was subsequently hit by another vehicle further down the road. A bullet hole was evident in the BMW's rear passenger window, as captured by aerial footage from NBC4's NewsChopper4. Presently, it is unknown whether the shooting occurred before, during, or after the crash.
Both the suspect and a female police officer were injured in the course of the incident, with both transported to hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries, as well as further updates on the situation, remain pending.
