In an effort to combat the pernicious effects of impaired driving, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced plans to conduct DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout late September 2023. Though penalties are steep, with first-time DUI charges averaging $13,500 in fines and a suspended license, these actions intend to instill awareness and ultimately foster public safety.

From September 28th to September 30th, DUI saturation patrols will be conducted in several areas, including South Bureau, Newton, Rampart, Hollywood, and North Hollywood. Furthermore, multiple DUI checkpoints will be established in key locations such as Slauson Avenue and the 110 Freeway, Van Nuys Boulevard, Pacific Coast Highway, and La Brea Avenue. It should be noted that these locations are subject to change or cancelation.

The LAPD determines DUI checkpoint locations based on data regarding impaired driving-related accidents and arrests. These operations serve a dual purpose: to educate drivers on the dangers of driving under the influence and to remove potentially impaired motorists from the roads. Enforcement not only focuses on drivers influenced by alcohol, but also on those impaired by prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana. Though recreational and medicinal marijuana use is legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains a criminal act.

Funding for this program came from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The hope is that the presence of DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols will deter people from driving under the influence, ultimately leading to safer streets for the residents of Los Angeles.
