Mike's Diner Bar in Palo Alto Secures Eleventh-Hour Deal and Avoids ClosureSource: Google Street View

An iconic Palo Alto restaurant on the verge of closure, Mike's Diner Bar, has successfully reached an eleventh-hour deal with its property owner, allowing it to continue operations and avoid eviction. According to a NBC Bay Area report, the establishment's future was uncertain due to a late rent payment in July, causing a tense negotiation process between the owner and the landlords.

Mike Wallau, the owner of Mike's Diner Bar, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming amount of community support he received throughout the ordeal. Over 1,400 people signed a petition to keep the restaurant open, leading local leaders like Palo Alto Mayor Lydia Kou to join the fight. The restaurant has served the area for nearly three decades and continues to bring Italian-American cuisine to the midtown neighborhood, making proud a devoted clientele that fiercely defended its continued operation.

Per a Palo Alto Online article, the property owner, Scher Holdings LLC, ultimately accepted Wallau's rent payments for July and August, allowing the restaurant to remain at its Middlefield Road location. Interestingly, as part of its continued efforts to serve the community, Mike's Diner Bar will now expand its services to include breakfast and lunch in addition to its existing dinner specialty.

Neighbors and local business owners both support Mike's Diner Bar and have expressed relief at the news of its prevailing against eviction, considering the possible closure of the beloved restaurant as a significant blow to the community. Annette Glanckopf, a Midtown resident and longtime neighborhood activist, told Palo Alto Online that Midtown lost 15 businesses during the pandemic, not counting the four damaged in a fire. Such a devastating number raised concerns about the long-term vitality of the area, and the potential eviction of Mike's Diner Bar posed a severe threat to the neighborhood's recovery and future growth.

Mayor Lydia Kou expressed her delight with the news that Mike's will remain open. She acknowledged the value of the restaurant as a community asset and urged the property owners to embrace their community-minded role in supporting an establishment like Mike's Diner Bar.
