Yesterday, September 26, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) announced their receipt of a $100,000 grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to combat alcohol-related harm in the community according to a press release. As this allocation underscores ongoing efforts to curb alcohol-related incidents.
LBPD Drug Investigations Section Lieutenant Baum explained that the funds are crucial in their pursuit to safeguard youth and mitigate crime at problem sites. This grant is a part of ABC’s Alcohol Policing Partnership (APP) program, which has helped nearly 50 Californian law enforcement agencies in addressing similar issues since its inception in 1995. The program aims to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods by fostering collaborative efforts between ABC and local law enforcement to reduce alcohol-related harm.
Engaging with and receiving feedback from local business owners could identify areas where education and stricter enforcement of existing regulations are needed to prevent sales to minors and intoxicated patrons. By establishing relationships based on proactive communication, the Long Beach community's perception of law enforcement can also shift towards trust and support, nurturing collaborative efforts over punitive ones.
Additionally, fostering educational initiatives targeting both parents and their wards may prove pivotal. The holistic approach might encompass discussions on the consequences of alcohol, methods for responsible consumption, and productive ways of combatting peer pressure. By instilling awareness among the community members, such programs could preemptively limit alcohol-related incidents.
