The impending nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) will be conducted on October 4, by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
According to the Solano County Office of Emergency Services, the purpose of this nationwide test is to ascertain the effectiveness of these alert systems in warning the general populace about major emergencies. Comprising two portions, the test will begin with the WEA being sent to consumer cellular phones, while the EAS portion will subsequently be sent to radios and televisions. This test aims to verify the potential of these communication channels in quickly disseminating vital information to ultimately preserve lives and reduce damage to property.
As an example of local efforts, the Solano County Office of Emergency Services (OES) actively encourages all residents to register for Alert Solano, an emergency notification system designed to provide critical information during emergencies, which is separate from the Federal EAS/WEA system.
