Abel Rodriguez Rivera, a 35-year-old from Ponce, Puerto Rico, was recently sentenced to five years prison time with an additional four years of supervised release. His sentencing, for involvement in a major cocaine trafficking conspiracy, took place on September 26, 2023, in a federal court in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Rivera was identified during an investigation into a drug trafficking organization in the Fitchburg area, which began following a fatal fentanyl overdose in September 2018. The operation used court-authorized wire and electronic interceptions, which unveiled Rivera's major role as a cocaine dealer to quickly uncover.

A massive amount of narcotics were seized in the operation. The haul included over 1.8 kilograms of a heroin/fentanyl mixture, 3.6 kilograms of cocaine, more than 50 grams of crack cocaine, in addition to a stolen, loaded handgun, drug manufacturing equipment and over $376,000 in cash.

Information shared by the United States Department of Justice reveals that Rivera isn't the only individual implicated in this case. Eighteen defendants have been found guilty so far, with Rivera being the thirteenth to receive a sentence. The remaining convicted parties are scheduled for sentencing later in the year.

The Department of Justice has highlighted the use of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) as part of their strategy combating criminal drug organizations. The intelligence-driven and prosecutor-led program focuses to dismantling high-level criminal operations that pose a risk to the United States.
