In a bid to better integrate cycling infrastructure and improve safety for both drivers and cyclists, Menlo Park is on the brink of making a significant stride forward with the Middle Avenue buffered bike lane pilot. According to a recent update from the City, the last remaining segment of the pilot project, stretching from El Camino Real to University Drive, is slated to begin construction in early October.

Long-awaited by many, this initiative will bring changes to the street layout, particularly around Nealon Park, where currently configured perpendicular parking spaces will soon be replaced by parallel parking spots. Furthermore, the City will designate no parking zones on both sides of Middle Avenue using proper signage, with enforcement beginning after installation.

As the pilot proceeds, city staff are set to work on the design of traffic calming improvements included in the project. This process will span roughly nine months and involve gathering community feedback through project-specific outreach meetings, tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2023. Once the pilot concludes, final findings are to be reviewed by the Complete Streets Commission and City Council for an eventual recommendation on the next steps.
