Early yesterday morning, the San Jose Police Department (SJPD) found themselves investigating a tragic incident that left an adult male pedestrian deceased after being struck by a garbage truck. According to the SJPD's media advisory, the collision happened at around 3:23 AM on the 40 block of S. Jackson Avenue, when a 2021 Peterbilt garbage truck, driven by a lone adult male, collided with the pedestrian while driving out of a rear parking lot.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, making this the 39th fatal collision and the 40th traffic death of 2023 in San Jose. Sadly, as the SJPD report also stated, this was the 23rd pedestrian to lose their life in the city this year, reflecting an alarming trend that seems to pervade recent years.
The driver of the garbage truck remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office after the process of confirming the victim's identity and notifying the next of kin.
The San Jose Police Department's Traffic Investigations Unit is seeking information from witnesses on the ground to aid their investigation.
