In what appears to be a shocking turn of events, eleven drivers were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) within the span of a three-week period through Labor Day weekend, as reported by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office participated in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization campaign, enhancing enforcement efforts to detect and apprehend suspected impaired drivers. As a part of this campaign, a DUI checkpoint was established on August 26, which led to two DUI arrests.
According to the official data, a staggering 32% of all traffic-related deaths in California during 2021 were attributed to drunk driving, amounting to approximately four people losing their lives daily.
Aside from the obvious danger drunk driving presents, the financial burden for first-time DUI offenders can be harsh. Fines and penalties cumulatively amount to $13,500 on average in California, and may also result in license suspension. It's crucial to remember that impairment may not only stem from alcoholic substances, but also cannabis products, illicit drugs, and prescription or over-the-counter medications.
