A man suspected of carrying a small sledgehammer died after collapsing during a citizen's arrest at an elementary school in Long Beach, Yesterday. According to FOXLA, the incident began when the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) received information about a man attempting to jump the school fences at McKinley Elementary School.
Upon arrival, the LBPD officers learned that the man had been pulled down and detained by a group of men not affiliated with the police department. Police handcuffed the man, only to discover he was unresponsive. Authorities called for medics to assess his condition, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. As of now, it is unknown if he collapsed due to a medical reason or if he was attacked.
A second set of reports, such as the one by KTLA, suggests that the man tried to enter the school grounds after being involved in a home invasion robbery. In response, a group of males pulled him down and detained him while waiting for law enforcement to arrive.
While the LBPD reported no force was used in the man's death, it remains unclear if the group of men involved in the citizen's arrest used any force in detaining the allegedly armed individual. The man's official cause of death will be determined by the L.A. County Coroner's Office.
