On Monday, September 25, a rapid turn of events escalated into a pursuit and later, a K9 contact. It all began when uniformed officers of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southeast Division received a LoJack alert for a stolen Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, according to LAPD Newsroom.
The officers spotted the vehicle driving eastbound on Century Boulevard from Main Street and conducted a U-turn to verify the license plate. Upon noticing the officers, the suspect, 23-year-old Daniel Montiel, accelerated away, leading to a pursuit. The chase came to an end when Montiel exited the driver's seat and fled on foot into a large property located at the 9400 block of South Main Street.
The property, a construction scrap yard, was filled with multiple free-standing bungalow style units, where Montiel attempted to elude the officers. Containment was established around the location, and after an initial assessment, officers believed Montiel had escaped the area. However, as they began breaking down containment, a citizen informed officers that an unknown male was seen hiding between some of the units.
Metropolitan Division K9 officers were called to the scene and prepared to search the area. Multiple K9 announcement warnings were broadcast via the public announcement systems around the perimeter prior to conducting the search. The K9 search eventually led to the discovery of Montiel's hiding spot within overgrown brush and debris, where he experienced a K9 contact that resulted in injuries. Montiel surrendered to the officers afterwards.
Montiel was transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department rescue ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, as noted by the LAPD Newsroom. Following the treatment, he was released from the hospital and cleared for booking. Montiel was booked for Felony Evading, with a Booking No. 6684567.
