Yesterday, the Escondido Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint, which led to the arrest of three drivers. Among those arrested, two were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, while the third was arrested for violating his DUI probation terms. According to the Escondido PD, during the same checkpoint, 23 drivers were cited for driving with a suspended license or not possessing a valid driver's license.

The checkpoint took place at Centre City Pkwy and Decatur Way from 5:45 p.m. to 11:50 p.m., with 738 motorists being contacted. Locations of DUI checkpoints are primarily chosen based on areas with a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of these checkpoints is not to apprehend offenders but to promote public safety by discouraging impaired driving.

The Escondido Police Department plans to hold another DUI/Driver's License checkpoint in December.

Funding for DUI checkpoints, including the one conducted on September 2, is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
