Tomorrow, September 23, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum becomes a battleground for the first-ever SuperMotocross World Championship Finals. This groundbreaking event combines two iconic championships - Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and AMA Pro Motocross Championship - into a 31-event series. Coinciding with the historic venue's "Coliseum Forever" celebration, in honor of its centennial anniversary, the finals are set to make a remarkable imprint on the world of motorsports according to CBS News.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which played an iconic role in both Supercross and Motocross history by hosting the first-ever "Superbowl of Motocross" race on July 8, 1972, marks the birth of Supercross. This not only makes the Coliseum an ideal choice to host the inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship Final in 2023, but also adds a layer of nostalgic significance to the event per a Fox LA News report.
In preparation for the highly anticipated race, over 750 truckloads of dirt, totaling 10,000 yards, have been brought in to create the massive mile-long man-made track according to Fox LA News. This track, designed to test the limits of the racers, will combine defining elements from both stadium and outdoor racing, making it the most physically, mentally, and technically challenging track ever built.
Fans can immerse themselves in the action early during the SuperMotocross FanFest, which runs from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The FanFest experience offers event-goers an insider's look as the teams prepare, practice and qualify for the main event, with a chance to interact with sponsor displays, sample Monster Energy drinks, and even purchase exclusive new gear according to Discover Los Angeles.
With a staggering $10 million payout throughout the 31-event season, including $5.5 million allocated for the playoffs and finals, the stakes are high for participating racers. The 450cc champion will take home a guaranteed $1 million, while the 250cc champion will walk away with $500,000 as reported by Discover Los Angeles.
