Baldwin Park SWAT Raid Nets Three Arrests Tied to Bullet-Riddled Hyundai

A search warrant executed by Baldwin Park police and a regional SWAT team led to the arrest of three people investigators believe are documented gang members or associates, following a shooting earlier this month that left a red Hyundai sedan riddled with bullet holes. Officers recovered a handgun and other evidence they say is tied to the shooting and other ongoing cases during the raid at a Baldwin Park residence.

The operation stemmed from a shooting the Baldwin Park Police Department is investigating in the 4600 block of Laurens Avenue on August 19, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. Detectives obtained a search warrant for a residence in the city, and on August 26 that warrant was carried out jointly by department personnel and the East San Gabriel Valley SWAT Team, a regional tactical unit formed under a memorandum of understanding between Baldwin Park, Azusa, and Irwindale that lets the mid-sized cities share specialized personnel and equipment for high-risk operations, per city records.

Officers recovered a red Hyundai sedan covered in bullet holes that they believe was used in the Laurens Avenue shooting and other crimes, the department's report states. It remains unclear whether anyone was struck by gunfire during the August 19 incident, and police have not released the identities or formal booking charges for the three people taken into custody.

Gang Unit Steers the Investigation

The case is being handled through the department's Gang Activity Prevention, or GAP, Unit, which investigates gang-related crimes, illegal weapons, and graffiti and leans heavily on community tips and intelligence, according to the department's own description of the unit. While investigators believe the suspects and the Hyundai are connected to broader crime in Baldwin Park, allegations of gang membership or criminal involvement remain unproven unless and until prosecutors file formal charges. If gang enhancements are ultimately pursued, California Penal Code Section 186.22 allows for mandatory consecutive prison enhancements ranging from two years to life for felonies committed for the benefit of, or in association with, a criminal street gang, according to FindLaw. Prosecutors would still need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that any offense was specifically intended to promote or assist a gang.

A City Still Reeling From Recent Violence

The raid lands in a city that has seen a string of serious gun violence in recent years. In May 2025, Baldwin Park Police Officer Samuel Riveros and a civilian were killed in an ambush shooting on Filhurst Avenue that triggered a major multi-agency SWAT response and led to murder charges against the gunman, as reported by FOX 11 Los Angeles. Months earlier, in March 2025, a shooting in the parking lot of a Target on Baldwin Park Boulevard wounded one person in an incident investigated as gang-related, resulting in one arrest, according to Hoodline's prior reporting.

The GAP Unit has also notched other recent successes. In June, the unit and the department's Detective Bureau executed multi-residence search warrants that turned up a firearm and more than 7,700 pounds of illegal fireworks, the department has reported. Citywide, Baldwin Park recorded 274 violent crimes and six homicides in 2024, a 16.9% drop from the 332 incidents reported the year before, according to data compiled by OpenCrime — though the city's violent crime rate of 404.2 per 100,000 residents still runs above the national average of 359.1.

Baldwin Park, a densely packed suburb of roughly 72,176 residents packed into just 6.79 square miles about 18 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, has leaned on regional tools to track suspects like the bullet-scarred Hyundai. Police departments across the San Gabriel Valley increasingly rely on Flock Safety automated license plate reader camera networks, which send real-time alerts to patrol officers when vehicles tied to felony investigations pass regional sensors, according to the Whittier Police Department. Day-to-day coverage in Baldwin Park itself falls to a Patrol Bureau built around two 12.5-hour shift platoons staffed by 29 patrol officers, seven sergeants, two traffic officers, and a canine team, per the department's own staffing figures.

Detectives have not said whether more arrests are expected or whether additional evidence from the raid could tie the Hyundai or the three people in custody to other unsolved cases in the city. For now, the GAP Unit says it is still working to piece together the full scope of the case and continues to seek tips from the public.
