In a tragic turn of events on Sunday, a dust storm in Palm Springs, California became a contributing factor in a deadly three-vehicle crash that took the lives of three Escondido residents. The Riverside County Coroner's Office identified the victims as 32-year-old Yovani Aguilera Tapia, and 29-year-olds David Losacco and Millicent Lewis.
The incident occurred at around 2:48 p.m. on North Gene Autry Trail between Salvia Road and Via Escuela as per Palm Springs PD tweet. The poor visibility caused by blowing sand resulted in two of the vehicles slowing down, erred by a third vehicle which failed to decelerate, ultimately leading to a rear-end collision with one of the other cars. The driver and two rear passengers of the third vehicle were fatally injured, while others involved sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Officers on the scene dismissed the likelihood of drugs or alcohol playing a part in the accident.

The Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) expressed support to the affected families and reminded drivers of the importance of exercising caution and adhering to safe driving practices, particularly when weather conditions become a challenge. "As we prioritize the well-being of those injured and extend our support to the affected families during this challenging time, we remind all drivers to exercise caution and adhere to safe driving practices, especially when faced with adverse weather conditions," PSPD stated in a release on Monday.
Recognizing the risks associated with low visibility during severe weather, the South Coast Air Quality Management District put a windblown dust advisory into effect, which is to remain in place until 8 a.m. Wednesday. Dust storms such as the one that occurred this past weekend create hazardous conditions for drivers and can lead to accidents like the one that tragically unfolded in Palm Springs.
As investigators continue to work on understanding the events leading up to the crash, anyone with information about the collision is encouraged to contact the Palm Springs Police Department's traffic division at 760-323-8125.
