A 64-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell at the Maguire Correctional Facility and later pronounced dead early morning today. The investigation into the cause of death is currently ongoing, per the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
As per a 2013 Bureau of Justice Statistics report, nearly 4,500 deaths occurred in state, federal prisons, and local jails from 2000 to 2013.
While the cause of death for the 64-year-old in the Maguire Correctional Facility remains under investigation, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has expressed its commitment to transparency and to thoroughly examine any contributing factors.
Preliminary findings from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office press release suggest the death to be natural in cause, but the final determination is still pending a completion by the Coroner's Office.
