Today, Cristofer Uluan Hernandez, 25, received a seven-year prison sentence for an armed robbery committed in March while on bail for another gun-related case in Alameda County. According to the San Mateo County District Attorney's office, he attempted to pilfer a catalytic converter, was discovered by the owner, and resorted to stealing the owner's cellphone at gunpoint.

According to a separate report from NBC Bay Area, the lifted converter was from a vehicle in the Emerald Hills neighborhood of unincorporated Redwood City. To quickly change the subject, Hernandez, upon realizing his actions were being filmed, swiped the phone of the witness at gunpoint. Authorities arrested him in Oakland after locating his vehicle.
Hernandez was detained under suspicion of robbery, firearm assault, theft, and vehicle tampering, and his bail was established at $100,000.
The incident has brought attention to the disturbing rise in catalytic converter thefts across the U.S., stimulated by the increased value of the precious metals inside these auto parts. To counteract this trend, law enforcement is encouraging communities to stay alert and report suspicious activities.
