Boston's Seaport district is host to the recently opened Caribbean-inspired cocktail bar, ZaZiBar. This expansive venture by Grenadian-born chef Olrie Roberts, who already runs two prosperous ZaZ restaurants, aims to enrich the city's culinary scene with an infusion of Caribbean flavors. Roberts' endeavor is notably boosting the growth of minority-owned enterprises in a predominantly white neighborhood, as stated in the Bay State Banner.
Starting his culinary journey in Grenada, Roberts later moved to the United States during his teenage years. Initially showcasing skills in welding, Roberts finally resolved to focus on his culinary passion and trained at the acclaimed Le Cordon Bleu in Boston. Following the establishment of his flagship ZaZ restaurant in Hyde Park in 2011 and Boston City Hall in 2022, ZaZiBar becomes the third venture of the budding ZaZ brand, as shown on the ZaZiBar website.
ZaZiBar's menu boasts a blend of Caribbean and global cuisines, reflecting Roberts' diverse culinary experience and creativity. Standout dishes include the Bubble Waffle Chix—a reinterpretation of traditional wood-smoked jerk chicken with a Japanese-inspired bubble waffle—and interesting dessert infusions like boozy blueberry whipped cream, according to Bay State Banner. The cocktail menu offers an eclectic mix of Caribbean and international flavors, featuring drinks like the ZaZi Lada and the Lychee Me Please.
Apart from its tantalizing menu, ZaZiBar strengthens the presence of Black-owned businesses in the Seaport area. Prior to 2022, the rapidly-evolving neighborhood had only two minority-owned enterprises among numerous businesses. Corean Reynolds, the City of Boston's director of nightlife economy, commended ZaZiBar and its initiative for paving the way for racial diversity in the Bay State Banner’s report.
ZaZiBar has garnered considerable attendance since its official unveiling on October 10th, indicating a strong community desire for variety in cuisine and minority-established ownership. To maintain constant interest, Chef Roberts plans to remodel the menu on a monthly basis while also hinting at promising expansions for the ZaZ brand in a recent Bay State Banner interview.
With the launch of ZaZiBar, Chef Olrie Roberts continues to solidify his influential standing in Boston's culinary community.
