The Cambridge LGBTQ+ Commission and the Cambridge Council on Aging have launched an LGBTQ+ Film Series for residents aged 60 and up. They invite everyone, from friends and family members to caretakers and allies, to join the initiative, aiming at promoting inclusivity among senior citizens.
In order to spark dialogue and broaden the audience's horizons, the LGBTQ+ Film Series will screen several movies with LGBTQ+ themes on the last Tuesday of the month at the Cambridge Senior Center (806 Massachusetts Ave.). The series begins on October 31st with Barry Jenkins' Moonlight, and continue with other films such as Jamie Babbit's But I'm a Cheerleader and Stu Maddux's Gen Silent.
These movies shed light on various aspects of LGBTQ+ life and build understanding through shared experiences—from growing up within LGBTQ+ communities, as depicted in Moonlight, to the struggles faced by senior LGBTQ+ individuals shown in Gen Silent.
Support for LGBTQ+ seniors is crucial in view of societal changes that can sometimes leave them feeling isolated. Programs like the Cambridge LGBTQ+ Film Series provide safe forums that help with engaging this demographic more effectively by facilitating dialogue and promoting community integration.
Per a news release by the City of Cambridge, interested individuals can learn more about the film series by viewing the official film series flyer or contact Phoebe Hallahan, the Programming Leader of the Cambridge LGBTQ+ Commission at [email protected] or 617-349-9177.
