Earlier today, letter carriers gathered in Compton, California, staging a protest against the escalating wave of crimes against them. According to ABC7 report, he demonstration, coordinated by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), was organised outside Compton's main post office, addressing the alarming increment of offences targeting postal workers.
Brian Renfroe, president of the NALC, revealed that only around 14% of crimes committed against their ranks have been prosecuted in recent times. Renfroe exposed a disturbing correlation following the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in attacks, attributing the inflation to thieves being drawn towards the valuable contents of mail, resultant of pandemic-related legislation and stimulus checks.
Renfroe has shed light on the troubling organization behind these crimes. He noted the existence of a criminal hierarchy, highlighting roles designated for robbing mail carriers and handling stolen checks, which indeed complicates prosecution due to the layered structure involved.
In response, in these crimes, the NALC has made strides, with rallies conducted in other cities including Chicago and Cincinnati. As highlighted on their Twitter, the organization, through protests and the use of the hashtag #EnoughIsEnough, advocates for the protection of their members while performing their duties. The Compton rally signifies the decisiveness and urgency of these workers to defend their right to conduct their tasks without intimidation or menace.
