A confrontation between a group of bicyclists and a car driver occurred in downtown San Mateo on October 13. With the incident escalating, one of the bikers, Jeffrey Seiler, displayed a weapon and resisted arrest. An account of these events is available in a San Mateo Police Department report.
The conflict began when the motorist, surrounded by cyclists who allegedly struck the vehicle multiple times, dialed 911. Seiler, purportedly displaying a weapon and aggressively yelling, approached the car. The police were informed of the situation and immediately dispatched several units to the scene.
The responding officers arrived to face a crowd of cyclists weaving through downtown San Mateo, yet based on the detailed description provided by the victim, Seiler was easily spotted. However, nabbing him proved to be more challenging as he eluded police for several blocks before finally being apprehended without further conflict.
The report also praised the effectiveness of surveillance cameras in documenting crime and holding perpetrators accountable. The San Mateo Police Department openly supports residents in registering their home surveillance cameras as an additional layer of security at cityofsanmateo.org.
