Former Navy civilian employee, Dawnell Parker, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery yesterday, October 26.

The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Parker accepted bribes during her tenure at the Naval Information Warfare Center in San Diego. She then allegedly abused her position to grant favorable status to defense contractors vying for government contracts.

Between March 2016 and October 2019, Parker is said to have received bribes, including expensive meals, from the president and CEO of a defense contractor based in Fredericksburg, Virginia, influencing government contracts in their favor. Another defense contractor in San Diego and Stafford, Virginia, was also implicated in the bribery scandal.

U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath highlighted the consequence of this corruption, citing the waste of taxpayer funds and erosion of public trust. Integrity in public service, she said, demands officials who act in the interest of their constituents rather than their own.

Bryan D. Denny from the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General expressed hope that Parker’s guilty plea will deter individuals contemplating similar abuses. He emphasized the importance of stringent public procurement practices to ensure proper use of taxpayer funds.
