Hayward City Council Adopts New Sidewalk Vending Ordinance Source: Google Street View

Following the example of the California state-wide decision to decriminalize sidewalk vending, the Hayward City Council adopted a new ordinance concerning the same matter. Set to come into effect on November 17, this ordinance sets up a permit program for vendors, aligning the city's rules with those previously enacted by the state in 2019. According to the City of Hayward, this new regulation provides a legal structure for sidewalk vendors that facilitates compatibility with local businesses and enforces public health safeguards.

The legislation states that sidewalk vendors looking forward to starting their business must obtain the Hayward Sidewalk Vending Permit. Food vendors will also need to have the Mobile Food Facility Permit from the Alameda County Department of Environmental Health. The announcement details that application requirements include personal information, the type of goods or food to be sold, specifying whether their business will be stationary or mobile, and if they are representing another person or entity.

Penalties for operating without a permit will be applied as monetary fines. A first offense will amount to $250, increasing up to $1,000 for repeated violations. Infringements of other regulations may result in fines varying from $100 to $500 per incidence.

For those who are interested and Hayward locals, more information and resources related to the new ordinance will soon be available on the City's website.
