Tragedy struck Atlanta's Capitol View neighborhood where three police officers were shot and a suspect was killed during a confrontation, Atlanta police reported. The violent encounter occurred near 1430 Desoto Ave. SW in the late hours of Saturday afternoon when officers, responding to a call, faced an armed man wielding a handgun and a knife. The suspect died amidst the struggle that ensued, and the officers were left wounded, necessitating immediate medical attention.
Medical updates indicated that two officers, both 31 and veterans of the force, were being prepped for surgery at Grady Hospital, the third, a 28-year-old who joined the department just five months ago was grazed by a bullet. According to Chief Darin Schierbaum in comments obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, "Right now, one officer is entering surgery. Another officer is being prepped for surgery. We do not believe that the third officer will require any medical attention that would require more than what's already being received in the emergency room," The officers were all reported to be breathing on their own following the incident.
Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his concern, “Your city is safe because of these individuals,” Dickens was quoted saying outside of the hospital on Saturday evening. In an equally supportive tone, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp asked Georgians via a statement to join him in praying for the officers' swift recovery and to remember the constant dangers faced by law enforcement.
Authorities have yet to release the names of the officers involved or the deceased suspect. Furthermore, the sequence of events that led to the first shots being fired remains under a cloud of uncertainty, a puzzle that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is set to piece together as part of their routine procedure in such officer-involved shootings, Chief Schierbaum noted that no charges could be brought against the shooter, for, "The perpetrator is deceased, ma'am," as reported in a Fox 5 interview.
In the commotion that surrounded the initial distress call, two Atlanta patrol cars were involved in a collision near the scene. No injuries stemmed from the accident, yet it resulted in a damaged police vehicle, as conveyed by Schierbaum. The neighborhood residents, including Claudia Groeneveld who voiced her shock and concern to FOX 5, "I’m not used to this sort of thing. It’s unfortunate, and I hope the policemen come through ok," she said.
