A family's request for a welfare check turned into a homicide investigation this week after Sandy Springs police found 25-year-old Williams Lopez Rodriguez dead inside an apartment at the Celebration at Sandy Springs complex on Roswell Road. Police say he died from an apparent gunshot wound to the head, and a 17-year-old suspect had already fled the scene before officers arrived.
According to WSB-TV, Sandy Springs police were called to the apartment complex around 6:30 p.m. Friday after family members requested the welfare check. Officers found Lopez Rodriguez dead inside the unit, and detectives soon identified 17-year-old Christopher Castillo as the suspect, per police. The station reports Castillo had already left the scene before officers got there.
Police say the crime scene centered on a second-floor unit inside Building 37 of the sprawling complex, according to a Facebook post from journalist Cody Alcorn. The property, located at 7000 Roswell Road NE, is managed by The Tipton Group, a firm that oversees residential operations and security policy at the site.
Arrest Came During a Traffic Stop in Cobb County
Cobb County police arrested Castillo on Saturday during a traffic stop near Barrett Parkway and Mall Boulevard, close to the Interstate 75 and Interstate 575 interchange, the same report notes. The area sits near a major commercial district in Kennesaw, well outside Fulton County, underscoring the multi-agency effort that led to Castillo's capture. It remains unclear how Cobb County officers first spotted his vehicle, a detail authorities have not yet disclosed.
Castillo has been charged with murder and with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, per the same account. At 17, he is being charged as an adult, since Georgia law allows minors that age to face adult felony proceedings. Fulton County Jail records show federal immigration authorities have also placed a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer on Castillo, a step that could trigger deportation proceedings once his state case concludes.
